漢‧劉安《淮南子‧人間訓》：邊塞上一位老人丟了一匹馬，鄰居來安慰他，他卻說：「怎麼知道這不是一件好事呢？」
幾個月以後，這匹馬卻帶著另一匹好馬回來，鄰居都來慶賀。
釋義：塞：邊境，邊塞；
邊界險要之處。
翁：老人。
失：丟失。
邊塞的一位老人丟了馬，本來是壞事，結果那匹馬不但回來了，還帶回來另一匹好馬。
比喻壞事在一定條件下也可能變成好事。
比喻一時雖然受到損失，也許反而因此能得到好處。
也指壞事在一定條件下可變為好事。
例句：處士有志未遂，甚為可惜，然「塞翁失馬，安知非福」。
