<P><STRONG>（路透芝加哥21日電）根據地質學家和「災難推遲」（Disaster Deferred）地震新書作者觀點，即使不是數千年，位於美國中西部的新馬德里（The New Madrid）地震帶，未來數百年也將不會發生大地震。</STRONG></P>
<P><BR><STRONG>這本新書是在1811年與1812年新馬德里地震帶發生大地震後將近<SPAN class=t_tag onclick=tagshow(event) href="tag.php?name=200">200</SPAN>年出版。當年地震曾改變密西西比河（Mississippi River）河道（暫時地）；地震也讓位於東岸的教堂鐘聲響起（部分真實）。</STRONG></P>
<P><BR><STRONG>西北大學（Northwestern University）地質學家史坦因（Seth Stein）接受訪問說，他和同僚們研究新馬德里斷層帶，發現它似乎逐步處於休眠狀態。</STRONG></P>

<P><STRONG>這個斷層橫跨密西西比河，從田納西州（Tennessee）曼非斯（Memphis）到南端的伊利諾州（Illinois）。</STRONG></P>
<P><BR><STRONG>史坦因接受電話訪問說：「我們發現新馬德里斷層已停止活動。那真是一個非常意外發現。」</STRONG></P>
